The 7th Street Safety Project (Phase 3) is continuing construction to complete traffic safety improvements for all road users along the corridor. Construction work began May 2020 to install project elements approved in Fall 2019, including protected bikeways and parking & loading changes.
Upcoming Construction
Boarding island installation is beginning this month and will continue on a rolling basis until they are all completed, pending weather and staff availability/capacity under COVID-19 safety guidelines. The boarding islands will be constructed at the following locations:
- 7th Street between Cleveland and Harrison school bus boarding island (August)
- 7th Street and Harrison transit boarding island (August)
- 7th and Bryant transit boarding island (September)
- 7th and Brannan transit boarding island (October)
Typical transit boarding island
When completed, these boarding islands will provide physical protection to bicyclists while facilitating passenger loading activities. People boarding Muni buses and school buses will have a safe space to get on and off vehicles. Bus drivers will not need to pull in and out of moving traffic since they will be able to use the dedicated space at the boarding islands.
We ask for your patience and consideration as we continue working to bring these vital safety improvements to the 7th Street corridor.
Traffic/Transit Impact
- At times, there may be temporary intersection or lane closures as crews perform work, resulting in possible travel delays. Please plan to allow for extra travel time during construction due to possible delays.
- Traffic will be routed around construction activity as necessary, but will not be detoured. Pedestrian pathways and access to driveways and commercial/residential buildings will be maintained at all times.
- Bus stops may be temporarily relocated nearby as new bus boarding islands are being constructed and will be restored to their original locations. Starting August 22, the inbound 19 Polk bus stop on 7th Street north of Townsend Street will permanently move to a new midblock transit boarding island on Townsend Street between 7th Street and 8th Street. This will facilitate transfers to the 10 Townsend bus route.
Completed Construction
Earlier this summer, between Harrison and Townsend, SFMTA installed a new protected bikeway located curbside, providing dedicated space for bicyclists and reducing the risk of conflicts with vehicles. To accommodate the protected bikeway configuration and transit boarding islands, we permanently removed a northbound travel lane on 7th Street between Brannan Street and Cleveland Street and shifted on-street parking away from the curb. In addition, SFMTA completed signal timing adjustments to provide pedestrians, right-turning drivers, and through bicyclists with separate signal phases to move through the intersection.
