Weekend Evening Work on West Portal Avenue:

New 700 foot long rails ready to get pulled into the Twin Peaks Tunnel

New, 700-foot rails ready to be pulled into the Twin Peaks Tunnel as part of a major project to modernize and upgrade the tunnel.

Overnight, starting at approximately 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28, crews plan to bring 700-foot "strings" of new rail into the Twin Peaks Tunnel in preparation for work over the summer. The rail is currently stored at the corner of Sloat and Junipero Serra boulevards and will be brought up West Portal Avenue to the tunnel on the inbound Muni track with special equipment.

This work will require closing of the center travel lanes on West Portal Avenue from Sloat to Ulloa and occasional intersection closures from 11:59 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. each weekend night. There will be construction flaggers and police officers on hand to help direct traffic. Neighbors should expect some noise as the rails are transported into the tunnel overnight.

Upcoming Work and Transit Changes:

Construction at Ulloa and West Portal Avenue

Starting mid-May 2018, excavation will take place to install new conduit for traffic signals at the intersection of Ulloa Street and West Portal Avenue. This is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This work will require the use of large equipment such as trucks, backhoes and excavators. During daytime hours you can expect louder than usual noises from the construction. Temporary closure of parking spaces and traffic reroutes will be required around the intersection.

Memorial Day Weekend Full Closure

On Memorial Day weekend, the tunnel will close after regular train service late Friday night and will remain closed until regular service starts early Tuesday morning. There will be bus substitutions for K, L and M lines for the whole weekend. More info about this closure to come.
