Next Monday marks the annual celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday and San Francisco’s annual march from the Caltrain Station at 4th and King streets to Yerba Buena Gardens, organized by the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation (NorcalMLK).
The SFMTA is partnering with NorcalMLK to provide free MLK2017 Commemorative Muni Passes to enable San Franciscans to attend the celebration at Yerba Buena Gardens. We will also provide complimentary shuttle service during the annual march.
Anyone is welcome to join Monday’s march, which begins at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive early. March organizers ask that groups of ten or more reserve complimentary group tickets online and pick them up at the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services at City Hall through Friday, Jan. 13.
The march will celebrate Dr. King’s groundbreaking civil rights protest marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The 1.5-mile journey will cross the Lefty O'Doul Bridge on 3rd Street near AT&T Park, where it will stop at Willie Mays Plaza to commemorate the crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, a symbol of violence and victory in the civil rights movement.
At the conclusion of the march, the San Francisco Interfaith Council will bring together the region’s faith leaders to commemorate Dr. King’s vision and lead a spiritual reflection of his message.
Other celebratory events include MLK King and Faith Lectures Friday, Jan. 13, and Sunday, Jan. 15, and an Arts Festival Sunday, Jan. 15.
