San Francisco Mayor Edwin Mah Lee passed away early this morning in San Francisco, according to City officials.
Mayor Lee was a strong champion for transportation and his leadership allowed for the continued replacement of the Muni fleet, key street safety projects and Muni service increases.
In a statement this morning, officials from the mayor's office said that family, friends and colleagues were at his side at the time of his passing. He is survived by his wife Anita and two daughters Brianna and Tania.
In accordance with the city charter, Board of Supervisors President London Breed is the acting Mayor of San Francisco effective immediately.
Mayor Lee was appointed as mayor in 2011, replacing then Mayor Gavin Newsom, who was elected the state's lieutenant governor. Mayor Lee went on to win the 2011 election and was re-elected in 2015. Lee had been a civil servant in San Francisco since the 1980s, when he was named investigator for the city's first whistleblower ordinance.
