Events:
Thanksgiving Day 5K Run
Thursday, 8 a.m.
AT&T Park
While many Bay Area families will celebrate Thanksgiving with an abundance of food, one in four residents in the counties of San Francisco and Marin are at risk of going hungry. By taking part in the Thanksgiving Day 5K Run, you will not only do yourself some good – you’ll also help the SF-Marin Food Bank feed local families.
This year, the Thanksgiving Day 5K run will take place along the waterfront between AT&T Park and the Ferry Building.
Turkey Day runners can take the N Judah bus, T Third bus, F Market, 10 Townsend, 30 Stockton, 45 Van Union/Stockton, and 47 Van Ness.
Muni service note: N Judah and T Third bus service will have re-routes.
Union Square Great Tree Lighting
Friday, 6 p.m.
Union Square
For many, the annual tree lighting in Union Square serves as the official start of the holiday season. Standing at 83 feet, the great tree will be decorated with over 1,000 ornaments. Once the switch is thrown, it will be illuminated by more than 33,000 LED lights. In addition to the holiday ice rink, this year’s ceremony will feature a headlining musical performance by singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc.
Holiday revelers can get to the festivities on the 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, 38 Geary, 38R Geary Rapid routes, Muni Metro or BART to Powell Station and the Powell Cable Car lines.
Muni service note: The 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, 38 Geary, and 38R Geary Rapid will have re-routes. Beginning around 2:30 p.m. cable car service on Powell Street will be substituted by bus shuttles, with a re-route, until after the ceremony has ended.
Winter Walk SF
Friday Thru January 1, All Day
Stockton Street between Geary and Ellis Street
Union Square SF is rolling out the green carpet for another festive trip along the Winter Walk – already a holiday favorite in its third year. The temporary pedestrian promenade, along Stockton Street between Geary and Ellis streets, will feature a colorful nightly light show, festive Dickens Carolers on Thursdays and Saturdays, plus unique food truck selections, not to mention cute and cuddly animals courtesy of the SFSPCA.
If you would like to see whiskers on kittens or buy warm woolen mittens, you can take Muni Metro to Powell Station, any Market Street bus route to Powell Street, the 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, 38 Geary, 38R Geary Rapid, and the Powell Cable Car lines.
Muni service note: Muni routes may see increased ridership.
Van Ness Construction Reminder:
All left turn lanes on Van Ness Avenue have been removed with the exceptions of those at Broadway (southbound), Lombard (northbound), and temporarily at Hayes (northbound).
In addition to the left turn removals, there will be a re-configuration of traffic lanes from three to two lanes in both directions.
For complete details on these changes, please revisit our November 4 blog post.
Ocean Avenue Construction Reminder:
Eastbound Ocean Avenue between Geneva and San Jose avenues now closed until mid-December due to the Balboa Park Station Area and Plaza Improvements project. As a result of the partial street closure, three 29 Sunset and 49 Van Ness/Mission stops have been temporarily relocated.
For complete details on the stop relocations and traffic detours, please visit the project’s service alert page.
Temporary J Church and K Ingleside Service Changes Reminder:
Due to Balboa Park Station Area and Plaza Improvement construction work, there are now temporary stop changes in effect for the J Church and K Ingleside lines at Balboa Park Station. These stop changes will be in place through the end of the year. For details, please read our September 1 blog post.
