People on bicycles and walking down a street

Dolores Huerta Elementary students and their parents ride to school for this year’s Bike and Roll to School Week.

Every road to school should be a safe one. But sometimes getting the kids to class in San Francisco can feel overwhelming. That’s where Safe Routes to School comes in.

“It’s a wonderful initiative to help students and families,” says SFMTA Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator Crystal Highfield.

San Francisco Safe Routes to School works to make walking, biking, rolling and taking transit to school safe and accessible. And we showcase it in “A Safe and Fun School Commute,” the latest episode of our podcast, Taken with Transportation.

“We work with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Walk San Francisco, Y-Bike of the YMCA, San Francisco Transit Riders and the San Francisco Unified School District,” Highfield says. “We’re hitting all our ways to get to school with experts who love our city and love working for the students.”

Kids and their parents walk to school in Chinatown during last year’s Walk and Roll to School Week.

The episode takes listeners on a Bike and Roll to School Week ride to Dolores Huerta Elementary. That’s where Host Melissa Culross meets Tex Dworkin and her daughter Georgia. “I’ve been a bike commuter for years,” Dworkin says. “And it’s awesome to be able to share this experience with my daughter.”

“I like biking!” six-year-old Georgia adds enthusiastically.

“A Safe and Fun School Commute” also includes interviews with SFMTA Transportation Planner Ben Frazier and San Francisco Supervisors Rafael Mandelman and Myrna Melgar.
