We’re installing speed safety cameras to make San Francisco streets safer for everyone.
This week, you may start seeing ads throughout San Francisco about the city’s new speed safety camera program. A public information campaign is kicking off to share the news that speed cameras will begin operating in March 2025.
The campaign advises drivers to:
- Travel at a safe speed
- Remember their role in keeping people safe on the road
The educational program will include ads on billboards and bus shelters as well as web and social media ads. This will help people adjust to a new form of speed enforcement that’s coming to San Francisco.
Here’s an example of the bus and billboard ads you’ll start to see around the city.
What to expect from the speed safety camera program
Timing
Starting in March, speed safety cameras will begin operating at up to 33 locations across the city.
Locations
The speed safety cameras will be placed on streets where speeding vehicles are a known issue.
You can find a map and the list of intersections on our Speed Safety Cameras project page.
How the cameras work
The speed safety cameras will photograph the rear license plate of vehicles traveling 11 MPH or more over the posted speed limit. Next, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a citation.
How fees work
Fee amounts are set by the state and vary based on the speed violation. You can find the list of fees on our Speed Safety Cameras project page. When the cameras are activated, speeding vehicles will receive warning notices during the first 60 days. After this period, the cameras will begin issuing fines for speeding.
Working to make streets safer
Speed is the leading cause of severe and fatal collisions on San Francisco’s streets. That’s why slowing vehicle speeds has long been a central pillar of the city’s street safety work.
Recently, we got the greenlight to add another proven tool – speed safety cameras – to our toolkit. Last year, AB 645 allowed San Francisco and five other cities to pilot speed safety cameras for a five-year period.
San Francisco will become the first city in California to implement speed safety cameras.
We’re proud to launch this tool to help protect schools, parks, senior centers and community centers across the city.
That’s why part of our awareness campaign focuses on the positive change we want to see on our streets.
The campaign features a digital ad that will begin rolling this week. We partnered with Ahmad Walker of Hunters Point Shipyard Artists to develop the animated video. It focuses on the community benefits that speed safety cameras will bring. In Ahmad’s signature clay animation style, the ad shows a personified speed camera slowing down cars. The result: the streets of San Francisco become safer and more joyful.
