The redesign of Valencia Street included hundreds of conversations with community members. The goal: understand how to make the street work for everyone.
Construction of the side-running bikeway on Valencia Street will begin on Monday, Feb. 10. Crews from the SFMTA and Public Works will build the bikeway on Valencia Street between 15th and 23rd streets.
This design will:
- Preserve a safe and separated option for people to bike and roll
- Make it easier for people on bicycles to visit mid-block locations
- Improve traffic circulation on the street. This will help people visiting the corridor, picking up food orders and dropping off supplies and goods to businesses.
- Keep parklets open
Valencia is a critical corridor for biking and rolling, but it was unsafe. That's why we've worked closely with the local community to improve conditions.
What to expect
Overview
Crews will begin by removing the current center-running bicycle lane. Despite the success of the pilot, we are removing it due to community feedback. Once the center-running bicycle lane has been removed, we will repave the center of the street. Next, crews will install a side-running lane. It was designed with substantial input from people who live, work, visit, walk, bike, roll and drive on Valencia Street.
Timing
This project is expected to last two to three months, depending on weather conditions. We are committed to working as quickly and safely as possible.
Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. There may be occasional work outside of those timeframes.
Stages
Construction work will start at the southern end of the corridor (at 23rd Street) and work north. But work may take place in multiple places at once. This includes grinding down the existing pavement, laying down new pavement and more.
Access
You will be able to access Valencia Street by car or bike, but there may be delays during construction. Consider alternate routes. Sidewalks will always be accessible, but we may need to remove some parking at times. Please pay attention to signs along the corridor.
Support Valencia businesses
During construction, all businesses on Valencia Street will be accessible. We encourage you to use this time to visit old favorites. It’s also a chance to find a new spot to grab a drink, meet up with friends or go shopping. Why not have a Perfect Day on Valencia Street?
Many of the shops and restaurants on Valencia are run by independent merchants. Consider supporting these small business owners.
