Project Update - December 2020

Share this:

Construction phase fully funded, estimated to start in early 2021

In November 2020, the Upper Market Street Safety Project secured $2.8 million in local Prop K sales tax revenue - including discretionary funds from the District 8 Supervisor's Office - to complete the project's $9.6 million construction phase budget. The SFMTA will ramp up stakeholder outreach in winter 2021, prior to starting construction in early spring.

Virtual Public Hearing on Friday, December 4, 2020 at 10:00 AM

The SFMTA is seeking to finalize circulation changes reviewed and discussed with the community at length during the project's planning phase. These include:

  • A new traffic signal at the Hermann/Laguna intersection
  • Left-turn restrictions at Market Street from Noe, Sanchez, and southbound 16th streets

The turn restrictions are intended to reduce conflicts at intersections for all modes, and would not be implemented until the tail end of construction in 2022.

Comments on the proposed changes can also be sent to sustainablestreets@sfmta.com or casey.hildreth@sfmta.com. No decisions will be made at the hearing, but public feedback will be used in making final staff determinations within the following week.

Safety fixes to Castro/Market/17th Street on their way

The SFMTA is moving ahead with several safety measures at this intersection in advance of major construction next year. These include a recently installed 'painted safety zone' and protected bikeway segment at the northwest corner, and a soon-to-be implemented traffic signal change that will reduce conflicts between westbound left turns onto Castro Street and the pedestrian crosswalk next to the Castro Station entrance. These low-cost upgrades are being coordinated with a traffic calming project for 17th Street and accessibility upgrades to Pink Triangle Park planned as part of the Upper Market Street Safety Project.
