Construction work on the Geary Rapid Project, in coordination with San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and San Francisco Public Works, is nearly complete. Installation of red transit lane treatments is underway. All other contract work is complete, including 1.5 miles of new sewer, almost three miles of upgraded water mains, 1.5 miles of roadway repaving, three new and eight upgraded traffic signals, four new pedestrian crossings, 32 pedestrian bulb-outs, 12 transit bulb-outs and 38 upgraded curb ramps.

A separate project sponsored by Verizon/MCI to install underground communications conduits on Geary between Van Ness Avenue and Market Street is currently being coordinated with the final trench restoration work. Performing this work before the trenches are restored will avoid repaving the roadway twice and minimize disruption to the community.

The following two-week construction forecast is subject to change due to weather delays or unexpected field conditions.

Masonic Avenue – Van Ness Avenue
Mondays through Fridays between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.:

  • Installation of red thermoplastic colorization in the existing transit-only lanes is planned for the weeks of October 4 and October 11 on westbound Geary Boulevard between Baker and Van Ness streets
  • Minor punch list repairs within the sidewalk and roadway are planned for the weeks of October 4 and October 11 on Geary Boulevard between Masonic and Van Ness avenues

Van Ness Avenue – Market Street
Mondays through Fridays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.:

  • Roadway and sidewalk work are planned for the week of October 4 on Geary Street between Grant and Kearny streets
  • Private utility work by Verizon/MCI to install underground conduits for future fiber-optic cables along Geary between Van Ness Avenue and Market Street is underway. Final roadway trench restoration and repaving work is planned after this coordinated work in order to avoid additional disruption to the community. Work is planned to be performed westwards from Market Street towards Van Ness Avenue.

Some parking will be temporarily restricted in construction zones and traffic lanes will be modified during active work. There may be brief vibrations during sidewalk and roadway excavation.
