The goal of the 8th Avenue Neighborway project is to create a safe and pleasant north-south route for people walking and biking in the Inner Richmond. This project is proposing speed humps, painted markings, stop signs, and other measures to improve safety and comfort for bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers.
Following the Town Hall meeting for the 8th Avenue Neighborway Project in January 2018, the SFMTA project team has refined the proposal and conducted internal SFMTA design review. The next step for the project is to present the final proposal to the public at an SFMTA Engineering Public Hearing on May 4th, 2018. Public Hearings are held at 10AM in Room 416, City Hall, 1 Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco, CA 94102. If you are unable to attend this public hearing, please email your comments to Charlie Ream at charlie.ream@sfmta.com for submittal to the hearing officer.
As discussed with the community in January, the final proposal does not include vehicle diversion as originally proposed. The project will install speed humps on 8th Avenue to reduce vehicle speeds and lessen the frequency and intensity of passing conflicts between bicycles and motor vehicles. Please download the 8th Avenue Neighborway Public Hearing Notification in the “RELATED REPORTS & DOCUMENTS” section on the right side of this page for a full map of proposed improvement. During design review, we were able to include pedestrian safety islands to increase safety for people walking across Anza Street. These islands are standard designs and will not prohibit any vehicle or bicycle turning movements.
The SFMTA will conduct a before/after evaluation of these improvements and will coordinate with Supervisor Fewer’s office to deliver a full report to the community within one year of implementation.
