Effective July 1, various parking fees, fines and rates are increasing. Highlights are shown below:
Background on the New Motorcycle Parking Rates The SFMTA has raised its rates for metered motorcycle parking throughout the City. These rates were raised in correspondence to the increase in rates for automobile parking. The rates for motorcycle parking have been established at one-fifth the rate for automobile parking, reflecting the proportional amount of curb space used by motorcycles in comparison to automobiles. In the downtown area, the rate for automobile parking is $3.50 per hour. This, therefore, corresponds to a motorcycle parking meter rate of $0.70 per hour. Rates vary depending upon where the parking meters are located in the City. The following table shows the various new rates, along with the old rates.
The SFMTA and the City of San Francisco recognize the value of motorcycling as a desired form of transportation. There are advantages and disadvantages, however, when assessing the motorcycle’s contribution to a “green” transportation system. The smaller size of motorcycles is a virtue in terms of the amount of space required for parking, and the rates charged for parking recognize that advantage. One of the little known negative aspects of motorcycles is their affect on air pollution. The California Air Resources Board’s EMission FACtors (EMFAC) model shows that on a per mile basis, new motorcycles can actually generate 14 times the amount of smog-forming pollution compared to that produced by a new automobile. One of the other exclusive advantages that the City of San Francisco provides to motorcycle commuters is the benefit of using on-street parking for all-day parking. Automobile drivers--without disabled placards—can only use on-street spaces for short-term parking Fees, fines and rates are increasing for other SFMTA services: Explore: |
