Preliminary plans for traffic calming Yerba Buena Avenue from Miraloma Drive to Plymouth Avenue , and Plymouth Avenue from Yerba Buena Avenue to Monterey Boulevard .

Yerba Buena Avenue at Miraloma Drive (pdf).
This proposal includes a painted island in the middle of this Y shaped intersection. Currently, northwestbound Yerba Buena Avenue drivers can go further north on Miraloma Drive or west continuing on Yerba Buena Avenue . However as these drivers approach the intersection, southbound drivers on Miraloma Drive do not know where northbound drivers are going. The painted island will force drivers to make a sharper left turn so that they would have to slow down to drive further west on Yerba Buena Avenue. Because they slow down, southbound Miraloma Drive motorists will know which way the northwest bound drivers are going, and be better able to judge gaps to proceed onto southeast bound Miraloma Drive .

Yerba Buena Avenue at Hazelwood and Casitas Avenue (pdf)
This proposal will create two islands in the middle of the intersection. The large island will channelize vehicles through the intersection better and discourage any high speed cut through traffic from Yerba Buena Avenue onto Hazelwood or Casitas Avenue . Drivers from Hazelwood and Casitas Avenues will be channelized onto the areas of the intersection where they will be able to see Yerba Buena Avenue drivers better. To further help improve visibility and to slow down Yerba Buena Avenue traffic, a smaller island that is offset from the center will force drivers to zig-zag their way through the intersection. The smaller island will first be painted as a trial, but will eventually be converted to a mountable island in the future. This is called a traffic chicane. Drivers will need to slow down to maneuver through the chicane to avoid raised islands.

Yerba Buena Avenue at Brentwood Avenue (pdf)
This intersection is quite tight, so no raised islands are proposed here. We do propose installing a PAINTED island instead. This will create a chicane in the middle of the intersection, so drivers will have to maneuver their way through.

Yerba Buena Avenue at Plymouth Avenue (pdf)
An island at the north leg of this intersection is proposed to stop drivers cutting the corner from southbound Yerba Buena Avenue to Plymouth Avenue . The island will force drivers to make a sharper left turn; thus slowing them down. Some parking may be removed to accommodate bus turning.

Plymouth Avenue between Yerba Buena Avenue and Monterey Boulevard (pdf)
This plan would create several chokers and bulbouts that would force drivers to stay in the center of the road instead of using the travel and parking lanes as one big travel lane. The narrower roadway would slow drivers down as they would feel squeezed between the solid yellow line, the opposing traffic approaching and the parked cars/bulbouts along the curb. The bulbouts would also shadow the parking lane so that parked cars would be better protected from sideswipes by the bulbouts and force drivers back onto the center travel lanes of the roadway. Some parking may need to be removed and fronting property owners will have a say in where the chokers and bulbouts are placed.
