The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) sells monthly Passes for frequent transit customers.  Monthly passes are valid for unlimited rides during the period of validity.  For customers who need unlimited rides for a short period of time, the SFMTA offers 1, 3,and 7-day passes known as Passports

Details follow.

Monthly Passes: All monthly passes are valid for one calendar month and are valid for unlimited use on all SFMTA vehicles.  Customers may also ride SFMTA/Muni vehicles for the first 3 days of the next calendar month.  Using a monthly pass on a Special Service route requires an additional payment. 

There are many places to buy a Muni monthly. Monthly passes may also be purchased online.

Note: Using any Muni Pass on Special Services requires an additional payment of $5.

Purchasing with a credit card or Commuter Checks

Passes, disabled stickers, single-ride ticket booklets, and Muni Maps may be purchased with a Visa or MasterCard credit card at the SFMTA Customer Service Center. Credit cards must be used to make an online purchase.

Payment for passes and disabled stickers may be made by Commuter Checks or TransitChek® at all vendors in the vendor list. Commuter Checks and TransitChek are employer-based programs.


Replacements and refunds

Damaged or defective passes may be exchanged at any SFMTA operated sales center, including the SFMTA Customer Service Center at 11 South Van Ness Avenue, and sales kiosks located at the Cable Car turnarounds at the intersections of Powell and Market or Hyde and Beach. Passes may only be presented for exchange during month of validity and must be recognizable. There are no refunds.

Single-Ride Ticket Booklets

Muni sells single-ride ticket booklets: easier than carrying loads of quarters.

The single-ride tickets sell in booklets of 10 for $20.00 or $2.00 each ride. The single-ride tickets may have a time expiration, and you get a free transfer/fare receipt when you use them (always ask for a transfer). A list of vendors that sell ticket booklets is available.

Procedures for single-ride ticket use:

  • Tickets are valid for the face value for boarding or entrance to Muni paid areas. If the face value is less than the current fare, you must pay the difference.
  • Tickets removed from booklets prior to boarding or entry are not valid fare.
  • Operator or agent removes or observes customer remove coupon from booklet at center perforation.
  • A single-ride ticket booklet may not be used to pay for more than one customer on a single ride. Each customer must have their own single-ride ticket booklet.
  • Customers will be issued a 90-minute transfer.
  • Do not place tickets in farebox.
  • Light rail: customers board at front door of front car and provide ticket to operator.
  • There are no refunds.
  • There is currenty no expiration date. This policy may be withdrawn at any time. Therefore:
    • Use older single-ride ticket booklets first.
    • Do not hoard single-ride ticket booklets.

Existing metal tokens are valid for a $2.00 cash fare but are no longer being distributed to the public.


School Single-Ride Ticket Booklets

School Single-Ride Tickets sell in booklets of 15 for $11.25 for the convenience of schools and youth groups. The tickets are not good for cable car service. They are sold at the SFMTA Customer Service Center.

There are no discounts available.
