Fell-Masonic Bicycle Traffic Signal Installed

FellMasonic_photo_graphic

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) joined with bicycle and pedestrian advocates to unveil the first traffic signal in San Francisco with a bicycle symbol. On September 16, 2008, the new signal was installed at the intersection of Fell Street and Masonic Avenue to give bicyclists and pedestrians a dedicated signal phase to cross Masonic Avenue on the popular Panhandle multi-use recreational path.
The new signal provides an exclusive time interval for bicyclists and pedestrians to cross Masonic together while automobiles intending to turn left onto Masonic from Fell are stopped at the traffic signal.  The bicycle component of the new signal uses a bicycle symbol in the familiar green, yellow and red phases to indicate when a bicyclist can cross Masonic.  The pedestrian signal continues to use the white walking figure and the orange hand to direct pedestrian traffic (see signal guide below for a description and graphic of the signals).

SFMTA and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition give away 2,000 bicycle lights

Bike_Light_Giveaway_English_Spanish

In an effort to Light up the Night, the SFMTA collaborated with the San Francisco Bicycle coalition and the Bicycle Advisory Committee on the annual Bike Light Giveaway.  1,500 lights were installed on needy bicycles December 2, 2008, from 6-7 pm at 6 locations throughout the City. Most lights were given away within 20 minutes! City College and Day Laborer distributions will follow in coming weeks, and lights will be given away in Bayview at holiday events. No lights will be distributed to anyone without a bicycle, or through individual request. This effort was funded by Proposition K Sales Tax funds and Transportation Development Act Article 13 funds.
