Transit Projects

The Capital Programs and Construction Division works closely with our contractors on various projects throughout the city to both enhance the safety and reliability of our transit system and to improve the transit system for future generations of San Francisans. For a brief description of each project, see the Transit Projects & Planning page.

The following projects are conducted by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority in partnership with the SFMTA:

Urban Planning Initiatives (UPI) is an SFMTA program that coordinates closely with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD):

Bicycle Projects

The Bicycle Program has successfully implemented many projects, including striping over 40 miles of bicycle lanes, creating 23 miles of bicycle paths, posting 82 miles of signed bicycle routes, and painting 1250 shared lane markings, or “sharrows.” For a brief description of each project, see the Bike Projects & Planning page.

Livable Streets Projects

The SFMTA is not just focused on public transit. Safety for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists is a top priority. We promote an attractive and safe transportation experience for all. For a brief description of each project, see the Livable Streets page.

Taxi Projects

Pedestrian Projects

One of the most scenic cities in the world, San Francisco is a great place to walk. Making sure that pedestrian travel is safe is the primary goal of our Pedestrian Program, part of Livable Streets. For a brief description of each project, see the Pedestrian Projects & Planning page.

Parking Projects

San Francisco has around 450,000 registered vehicles, and each one needs a place to park. This increases by about 35,000 vehicles during each workday. For a brief description of each project, see the Parking Projects & Planning page.

  • Traffic Projects

It can be tough and often frustrating to get around San Francisco, whether you're going for a walk, bike ride, drive, or catching a bus. The good news is that several new City programs are well underway to make your travels in and around the City a lot easier. For a brief description of each project, see the Traffic Projects & Planning page.
