- Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- Location: San Francisco Railway Museum, 77 Steuart Street between Market Street and Mission Street
The annual Muni Heritage Weekend, presented by the SFMTA in partnership with Market Street Railway, returns this year to celebrate San Francisco’s iconic public transit system. Join us Saturday–Sunday, September 20–21, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Don Chee Way Plaza and the Market Street Railway Museum (77 Steuart Street, between Market and Mission Streets).
This two-day event offers a rare opportunity to explore Muni’s past, present, and future through historic streetcars, buses, and cable cars—vehicles that have connected San Franciscans for over a century. Visitors of all ages can enjoy free rides departing from the event, interactive exhibits, family-friendly activities, and hands-on experiences that highlight the transformative role of transit in shaping our city.
What to Expect:
Step aboard unique vintage transit vehicles rarely seen on the modern streets of San Francisco. The festivities will unfold near the San Francisco Railway Museum, conveniently located near the Ferry Building and Embarcadero Plaza. All vintage buses and special excursion streetcars depart for round trip rides from the plaza directly across from the museum.
Event Highlights:
- Ride Vintage transit: Hop aboard historic streetcars, buses, and cable cars spanning 25 to 141 years of service. Don't forget to check out additional vintage vehicles on display around the outdoor plaza and extending to the Embarcadero.
- Interactive installations:
- Skip the Powell turnaround lines and snap a photo with our motorized cable car, a retired mobile tribute to the city’s classic cable cars.
- Experience Bus by ‘Muni Raised Me,’ SOMArts’: Step into a double feature that honors San Francisco’s diverse stories. Muni Raised Me shares youth's perspectives on growing up with Muni, while the Altared SF Bus transforms a retired coach into a rolling interactive altar honoring immigrant families, local memory, and life lived on transit.
- Family-friendly fun: Enjoy kids’ activities, artifact exhibits, and informational booths for all ages.
- Special tours: Sign up in advance for a guided cable car walking tour hosted by SF City Guides.
- Visit the SF Railway Museum: Free admission plus a chance to grab a unique transit-themed souvenir.
- The Muni Store Pop-up: The Muni Store is coming to life! Get your favorite Muni official merch in person—and ride in style.
A Captivating Experience
- Ride the same transit vehicles that generations of San Franciscans once used, including the beloved 1896 "Dinky" streetcar.
- Cruise along the Embarcadero up to Pier 39 on a Streetcar loop aboard Muni’s iconic “Boat Tram” from Blackpool, England!
- Take a ride through time—experience buses from every decade between the 1930s and 2010s, including ones you may remember from your own childhood.
